We saw Jonathan Trott be given his first start at test level in the Ashes during the last time it was in England, he stepped into the fourth test and put in a performance for the ages which more or less altered the course of the series and set England up for a potential series win when a draw was looking ever likely. That patient innings, which culminated in a test century on debut in the Ashes, will likely be living large in the memories of many an English fan - and Trott himself for that matter.

Punters can back Jonathan Trott to be named the top series batsman with a solid 7/1 price at this point. With a big performance in the first test, those odds would be clipped in half immediately, even if he wasn’t currently listed as the highest run-scorer.

In regards to the entirety of the competition, Alastair Cook is the outright choice with a very solid 9/2 price on him being named as the top batsman. There certainly is plenty of competition out there for him at the moment with Michael Clarke trading at 5/1 and Kevin Pietersen available at 6/1.

Clarke and Pietersen are both definitely capable of securing the top batsman title and you reckon that if Clarke is going to pull it off, it will be because the rest of his side failed to turn up anything too useful with the bat. Since Australia are in a bit of a different spot now in regards to their batting you have to opt for the tried and true option - and Shane Watson just doesn’t look appealing at this point - particularly with a 12/1 price tag.

Some of the interesting options for young players include Jonny Bairstow at 28/1, Nick Compton at 14/1 and Joe Root - who can be backed at a very short 10/1 and trades as the sixth most likely winner of the top Ashes batsman title.
