ATP 2010 US OPEN SET BETTING WAWRINKA VS YOUZHNY
Wawrinka and Youzhny lead off the men’s singles quarterfinal round on Thursday when they take Arthur Ashe Stadium in the afternoon. Few expected Wawrinka or Youzhny to emerge from a section of the draw that was stacked with hard court heavyweights, namely Murray and Berdych. Yet here they are, through to the quarterfinals –in Wawrinka’s case, his first-ever major quarterfinal –and today they will vie to go one better.
The stage is set for a compelling and intriguing match between these two unlikely quarterfinalists at the 2010 US Open and compounding matters further is the conspicuous absence of a clear favourite across all platforms.
Every market on this quarterfinal billing is tightly cast and although several bookmakers serve the pair as a matching set (priced the same), and others split hairs between the two, offering Youzhny as the slim favourite to advance into the semis, betting should be split down the middle and both are likely to draw significant support.
William Hill serves up Wawrinka and Youzhny at an unassuming 5/6 each to win outright. Paddy Power edges Youzhny ahead at 4/5 while listing Wawrinka at his heels at Evens. Whereas Sportingbet.com though still offering Youzhny at 4/5 moves Wawrinka even further right field, at 9/10.
In such a market environment, it’s quite likely set betting markets will carry the brunt of the action.
In keeping with the equality theme, William Hill offers identical prices for Wawrinka and Youzhny in the match score market. A 3-0 score cast is tipped at 4/1, 3-1 at 7/2 and 3-2 at 9/2 for each.
This parity continues in each, and every, market at William Hill. Both are priced at 1/7 each to take the first set. There is also no difference either in the correct set score markets as a 6-0 score is priced the largest at 40/1 and a 6-4 score cast priced the shortest at 24/5, in both their cases.
If you are looking for some disparity, Paddy Power is a bit less mundane, allowing Youzhny to pull ahead ever so slightly in several set betting markets. Youzhny is priced rather favourably to take the match in either 3 or 4 sets, listed at 10/3 and 16/5, respectively. Clearly, bookmakers here are taking stock of Youzhny’s slim edge on this surface. To win by a 3-2 score, Youzhny is listed at 5/1.
Wawrinka fails the grade with Paddy Power as he’s listed a rather large bet to win in straight sets or five sets, tipped at 5/1 and 9/2 respectively. The Swiss is best priced to win in four sets at 4/1.
Sportingbet.com has a slightly different take on the set betting market. Wawrinka to win in straight sets (3-0) is tipped at 9/2 while a 3-2 score is tipped largest at 5/1. A 3-1 score is priced at 4/1. Where Youzhny is concerned, he’s priced the same to win by either a 3-0 or 3-1 score, tipped at 7/2. While a 3-2 score is tipped at 5/1.
