ATP ROGERS CUP BETTING DJOKOVIC VS. CHARDY
Djokovic is set to take on Jeremy Chardy in the last quarterfinal match at the Rogers Cup, an eye-catching affair that should carry us nicely into the weekend and a dramatic conclusion to the tournament.
Djokovic vs. Chardy follows the first feature match of the evening session between Federer and Berdych. At the time, of writing, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray are through to the semis, after securing their place in the last four in the afternoon session, and Federer and Berdych are underway, deciding the third spot on Saturday’s semi-final card.
That Djokovic is the final act at Rexall Place augurs well for him. Surely, you’ve been privy to the many images of Nole, draping a towel over his head as if it were a turban, during his opening round match against Benneteau. He had un petite problem with the heat, he did.
He worked it out though. Fortunately, his second round encounter was a late afternoon match against Hanescu, so not too much trouble there.
Against Frenchman Chardy, Djokovic has the most ideal time slot – late at night in Toronto – so those heat issues should be a non-factor.
Djokovic enters the match as the 2/9 favourite while Chardy is the 11/4 puppy.
He might have un petite problem with Chardy though. Chardy, a lovely prospect in the game, is enjoying a stellar week in Toronto. He is serving exceptionally well; actually, led the tournament for a while before Kohlschreiber overtook him in several categories. Nothing he can’t fix with a good performance against Djokovic.
His summer European stint showed some marked improvements by him. He was definitely headed in the right direction and things are finally coming together for him here.
He is singularly responsible for delivering two big upsets at the Rogers Cup. Thanks to Chardy, both Verdasco and Davydenko are probably taking in the sights in Cincinnati, where the next Masters event is set to get underway in a few days.
Beating Djokovic is easier said than done. Chardy trails 0-4 against Djokovic. He has never beaten him and in all previous accounts, he’d barely made an impression on the Serbian starlet.
I think this time around he has his best chance to make a statement. Beating Verdasco and Djokovic should do wonders for his confidence. If he can overcome the nerves that will surely be there that will be the first step. Tennis under the lights on Center Court against an opponent like Djokovic can be intimidating.
