ATP ROGERS CUP BETTING PICKS MURRAY VS. NALBANDIAN
Andy Murray is set to go head-to-head with a resurgent David Nalbandian at the Rogers Cup today, a spot in the semi-final round on the line. And nothing about their matchup is straightforward.
Still this match is billed as THE match of the day. Hope it lives up to its billing.
Emotions are mixed about this matchup, and betting markets are contrary. Looking at some of the prices circulating, you would be forgiven if you didn’t know which player was in the top five.
World No. 4 Murray is listed at Evens, while Nalbandian, who currently ranks in the top 40 (but really is top 10 quality) is the favourite at 8/11.
This market, so against the natural established order, is reflected almost unanimously across the board, with the likes of Paddy Power, William Hill and more...
Murray is clearly found wanting. The confidence in him is at an all time low, and you could say rightfully so.
He is in the midst of a wholly underwhelming season, conspicuously without any titles. He has been struggling on and off-court, and, most concerning, is the fact that he is losing matches he should be winning based on rank and status in the game.
That he has decided to fire his coach (because when things go awry, it’s always the coach’s fault) right before the biggest event on the season, the US Open, is the move of a desperate man. Stroke of genius it isn’t, because if you ask me, he looks more lost on court now than he did before.
It certainly doesn’t augur well for his title defence campaign this week, and if his performance, against Monfils, were any indication of what we are to expect from him, close your eyes...it’s not going to be pretty.
In the last 16, Murray won an erratic affair against Monfils, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 to clinch a berth in the final eight. Not much to take away from that performance except the feeling that Murray might be in trouble in the coming rounds.
Well, Nalbandian should hold up his end of the billing. He is on a hot streak right now. An eight-match winning streak to be precise, which includes winning the title in Washington and taking out some stiff opposition in Toronto – David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo and Robin Soderling. By, the way, he's just after hip surgery. The way he traipses about court like a gazelle, it's safe to say he defies medical science.
Nalbandian has the convincing 2-0 edge over Murray – albeit a tad out of date as it has been some time since they collided. Still, I think it bodes well for him going into this match knowing he has never lost to Muzz.
