Australia Fight Back to Reignite Series
- By Adam Currie on December 17, 2010 14:56 GMTMitchell Johnson produced the most devastating display of swing bowling of his career as Australia roared back into Ashes contention on the second day of a riveting Perth Test.
England was cruising along comfortably at 78-0 when the left-arm seamer turned the game on its head with a spell of four wickets for seven runs.
Andrew Strauss and Ian bell were the only two batsmen to offer any resistance, as England undid all the hard work of Adelaide by collapsing to 187 all out.
The whole feeling of the series had been altered with each booming inswinger resulting in all ten England wickets falling for 109.
England's three seamers did their best to pull back in the final session.
Phillip Hughes was worked over for the second time in the match before edging to third slip off Finn.
Next up saw Ricky Ponting continue his poor run of form when he gloved one down the leg side which was ruled out on review.
Clarke, another class player that has been out of touch this series, came out playing aggressively to notch up 20 off 17 balls before chopping a rising ball off Tremlett back onto his stumps.
At that stage, England may have been beginning to think that the momentum had once again swung, however the ever dependable duo of Watson and Hussey played a decent mixture of defensive strokeplay, coupled with swashbuckling blows to take Australia to the close of play.
The 81-run advantage Australia earned during the first two sessions could prove to be essential here.
Johnson's magical swing bowling display has also once again ignited this series, as his devastating spell changes the complexion of not only the game but also the series.
The odds have now shifted heavily in favour of the hosts for this Third Test with it being hard to see even a batting line up such as this being able to chase a likely 400 target.
Australia finds themselves odds-on, while England is now rather long.
Steve Finn is the man pinned to produce the best figures for the visitors in the second innings; however one would imagine that Jimmy Anderson, coupled with the ability to reverse swing the ball, could prove lethal on the third day.
Interesting Stat: England have made six scores below 200 at Perth. They have gone on to lose on all five previous occasions.
