Australia vs. England- 1st Ashes Test Day 5- In Play Betting Tips
- By Adam Currie on November 28, 2010 19:30 GMTDespite this Gabba opener leaning towards a draw leading into the fifth and final day, there are still plenty of options available for those looking to accumulate some earnings.
While there have been instances of utter long shot madness in this contest, namely a Peter Siddle hat-trick, a Mike Hussey career-saving 195 and a record opening partnership by England, the final day should prove to be somewhat more predictable.
The result is a foregone conclusion at this stage, with England staging a remarkable and gutsy comeback on the fourth day. A draw is where this will be, however what sort of drama awaits the cricketing faithful on day 5?
Cook who has shown remarkable form on tour has some bookmakers offering an over/under 168 runs bet his way. With Cook already sitting on 133, this might be a safe one. He will be heading out on the final morning to try and play the anchor role once more, with a double-ton a high possibility.
England’s number three Jonathan Trott is also worth a shout here, with odds at 1.85 for him to score both under/over 90 runs. Trott is traditionally a batsman that when he reaches 50, goes on to register a ton so an ‘over’ bet here seems a likely scenario.
With Cook and Trott having seen off the new ball yesterday, one would imagine that the opening session should not be as dramatic as one would witness on day one.
Therefore a live bet on Cook to reach 150 seems a good one, and with the bookmakers offering a solid 1.44 for him to cross the mark, you would be hard pressed to bet against the man in form.
The ‘Next batsmen out’ scenario is also an enticing one, although a little harder to call.
The overnight break would mean that both of these men will once again have to play themselves in. The Aussies will fancy themselves to take at least one of them cheaply, and of the two you would imagine that Cook might be the man to go. They are both evenly split at 1.91 here.
Regardless of the result, this match still has a lot of cricket to be played. We have seen an England collapse on numerous occasions, and one would not rule out a dramatic last day’s play here at the Gabba.
There are opportunities a-plenty to earn some pennies on the fifth and final day, and it simply would not be an Ashes test without some collapse in one form or another.
Bring on the Second Test!
