Goalscorer Preview - Manchester United v Liverpool: Nani
- By Lewis Doe on January 12, 2011 14:08 GMTNani should be chomping at the bit to score after returning to full fitness and the Manchester United first team.
Nani has looked like one of the best wide players in England so far this season and he has scored an impressive ten goals so far in all competitions for club and country. He will be used in this match to terrorise Liverpool down the right and left of the pitch.
The best thing about Nani’s game is that Sir Alex Ferguson knows he will be equally effective, and will play the same role, whether United are using a 4-4-2 formation, a 4-5-1 formation or a 4-3-3 formation.
The fact he can play effectively on either side of the pitch makes him difficult to defend against. His natural side is on the right, which means he can get beyond the full-back to deliver crosses but if he’s on the left then he can cut inside and rain shots in on goal.
United have been missing a quality and fast wide player over recent weeks as Nani himself has been battling against a hip injury and Park Ji-Sung has been away on international duty with South Korea. However, Nani returned to the side against Stoke City and scored a brilliant goal in a very efficient display.
If there has been one problem with Nani’s game since he joined United it’s that he has been too selfish. This has improved and he now sets up more goals than ever before and seems to be reading the game with the same efficiency as a Ryan Giggs in the side.
He also looks more determined because Ferguson may have made it clear that he is the most important wide player that the club currently possess. This means the days of show boating and selfishness are over and the Portuguese’s game has to be aimed at goal scoring and productiveness.
