The whitewash bet was trading at a hefty 8/1 at the start of the series and after scrapping out the first win and then blowing out the Aussies at Lord’s, England will take a gigantic step towards that 5-0 result - a result which would live long in the minds of English cricket fans everywhere. It would virtually erase the embarrassment suffered a few years ago when England were taken to the woodpile by the Australians after the 2006 Ashes series.
Ian Bell already looks to have the top series batsmen award locked up and the bookmakers have him priced at a very slim 8/15 for the outright triumph here. His only real competition looks to be Joe Root at a 4/1 price while Jonathan Trott floats at around 10/1 with Michael Clarke.
The battle for top Ashes bowler looks significantly more close with Graeme Swann and James Anderson both available at 11/10 for the top bowler award. Both have been on absolute tears lately and have been ably deputized by the likes of Stuart Broad, Steve Finn and Tim Bresnan. Even Joe Root chipped in with a pair of wickets in the last test match.
Michael Clarke remains the outright choice to grab the first Australian century of the Ashes - it is definitely telling that nobody has posted a triple digit score with the bat. The bookmakers are still lukewarm about his ability to do it - especially with England’s bowlers in such quality form. Clarke can be backed at 2/1 while Shane Watson is just behind at a 4/1 price. He has been virtually anonymous throughout the series so Chris Rogers at 11/2 may be the best option.
