Rooney Needs to Quickly Move On
- By Lewis Doe on March 1, 2011 07:40 GMTWayne Rooney should be determined to play well as he faces a lengthy ban from the Football Association.
Rooney got another goal during the 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic but the striker was involved in an off the ball incident that could see him banned for a crucial period of games. Rooney appeared to elbow Wigan player James McCarthy who put at an arm to stop him running onto a stray ball.
However, any ban will not be effective immediately and it will mean that Rooney should take his regular place in the United side for the match against Chelsea. Rooney should therefore have a strong determination to do well on a ground where he has had nothing but bad memories in the past.
Rooney can play at the very top of the team for this match or he can play down one of the flanks if Sir Alex Ferguson wants his team to take more of a five man midfield approach to the game. Either way Rooney is effective and will remain one of the most dangerous players in the United team.
Rooney’s first goal from open play this season took a long time in coming and the relief of the player was clear for all to see. Some are still suggesting that Rooney is playing nowhere near his best but he’s scoring vital goals that will help the club to another Premier League title if they can manage to secure first place.
Rooney will be key both on and off the ball in this game. United may face long spells without possession which means Rooney will have to do a lot of pressing off the ball. This is something he has done in the past and he’s capable of setting a brilliant example if he’s fired up for a game.
Rooney will be crucial if United are forced to counter attack. There have been classic counter attack goals from the United team against Arsenal in the recent past that have all involved Rooney. He’ll also be throwing his hat into the ring to take free kicks and penalties.
