Time for Nani to Step Up
- By Lewis Doe on March 1, 2011 07:38 GMTNani will be one of Manchester United’s main attacking threats for the Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Nani seems to be over the days where his inconsistency in the United team was at its worst. He is now one of the most productive figures in the side because he can create goals out of nothing as well as scoring more than ever himself.
Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to use two very wide players either side of a three man central midfield. Nani will be one of these players because he’s extremely effective in the wide areas of the pitch. Ferguson will more than likely play Michael Carrick or Darren Fletcher towards Nani’s side of the pitch as defensive cover.
The reason why Nani will be a goalscoring threat is because he’s dangerous in more ways than one. He’s as quick as any other player in the United team and this will be crucial in terms of running in behind the full back if United are forced to play counter attacking football.
The Portuguese is also very good in possession of the football which enables him to come inside of needed. This season has shown just how effective Nani can be when he cuts back inside to rain shots in on goal. More often than not he will at least hit the target to force the goalkeeper in to some sort of save.
Nani is also going to be crucial in terms of set plays for his team. Every free kick that United get around the edge of the opponent’s penalty area will have Nani licking his lips because he’s arguably the best striker of a dead ball in the United team. If he does take some of these free kicks then he’s naturally going to have more shots towards goal.
Nani is getting stronger with every game and it’s highly unlikely that a physical Chelsea defence will be able to brush him off of the ball during this game. This is an aspect of Nani’s game where he has been criticised in the past but it shouldn’t be a problem.
