US OPEN BETTING NADAL ON VERGE OF US OPEN TITLE
Rafael Nadal is living up to his top seeding brilliantly as he takes a commanding two sets lead on Mikhail Youzhny; he’s up 6-2, 6-3...on the Russian (at the time of writing), and should the match saunter along Nadal’s merry pace he’s surely through to his first-ever US Open final.
It’s easy to assume the match is done and done, and look ahead to the final and a potential Nadal-Federer final. Nadal is an astounding 105-1 when winning the first set of a Grand Slam, so unless Youzhny plans on becoming only the second player ever to beat Nadal after falling behind, which, by the way, I don’t see happening, we are half-way to the dream final .
Although the entire tennis betting world wants to witness what would be a historic event on Sunday should Nadal and Federer setup the much-anticipated date, it wouldn’t matter which player Nadal faces because on paper he has the significant edge over both.
Nadal, tipped at Evens to win the tournament, leads both Federer and Djokovic 14-7 lifetime. Obviously, Federer is the preferred opponent but Djokovic is a legitimate threat to both Federer and Nadal. Market estimates Federer at a tempting 11/10 right now to win the title and Djokovic at a rather large 6/1.
Nadal and Federer have met seven times in a major final and Nadal has the overwhelming 5-2 edge; crucially, spanning all surfaces. To date, Federer has only ever beaten Nadal at the Wimbledon final (twice).
Should Nadal-Federer meet in the final, and Nadal win, the significance of such a victory would be monumental for tennis history and the legacy of both players. It would be the first time two players have met in the final of all majors and if it indeed goes Nadal's way, he would have beaten Le maestro, the so-called, greatest player of all time in all four majors. Who the greatest player is, then, would have to be open to debate, no.
Nadal and Djokovic have never stared each other down in the final of any major. They have, however, met in the final of a tournament four times – at three Masters (Indian Wells, Rome and Monte Carlo) and at London Queen’s Club. Nadal is a convincing 4-0 over Djokovic.
Indeed these stats augur well for Nadal and his fans, and whatever scenario emerges on Sunday you could be sure he would be a good bet; but if we could script the final for Sunday, you and I know we would script it so...watch this space...
