Manchester City head into the upcoming English Premier League season in the unfamiliar position of defending champions and this means that it's going to be tougher to get good prices on them this time around than it has been in the past.

As the 2012 Community Shield is nearly upon us, we're looking ahead to the outright odds for this one and the bookmakers seem convinced that City should be able to get the job done over FA Cup and Champions League winners Chelsea.
As it currently stands, punters will find City trading around 13/10 for the win while the draw can be backed at 21/10 and Chelsea sit at 9/5. This match in particular can be one of the drier ones of the season with both sides still finding their form and not looking to commit themselves forward too much as three points in the opening weekend of the Premier League are much more important than the Community Shield, for many, at least.
One particularly interesting subplot to this one is the face-off between Fernando Torres and Sergio Aguero. The Spanish strikers are both required to have very big seasons this year and Torres was able to finally flash enough form to show that he can be relied upon to score on a regular basis.
Aguero is favoured to score ahead of Torres with a 5/4 anytime price compared to his opponents 7/4 listing. Carlos Tevez is somehow still at Manchester City and he trades at a 6/4 anytime price alongside Mario Balotelli – who many expect to have a breakout year.
Examining the goalscorer betting, one of the first things that jumps out is the fact that the Community Shield is usually a low-scoring affair and Chelsea tend to score a lot of their goals from defence during set-piece situations and corners. This might be a good opportunity to back somebody like John Terry or David Luiz to open the scoring with a 20/1 and 25/1 price tag on each of them.
No scorers in the first 90 minutes pays out at 7/1 and it remains distinctly reasonable. A 0-0 result would actually out at a better price tag with a 10/1 correct score price. The favoured correct score result looks to be a 1-1 draw at 6/1.
William Hill is offering up an enhanced wincast special on this where you can back Aguero to score anytime (other than a penalty shootout) and City to win at 7/2 while Torres to score anytime and Chelsea to win at 5/1. This counts only for a 90 minutes win.
