Fowler Shoots 66 and is Still Four Off Lead at Disney
- By Dorian Netolicky on November 12, 2010 17:21 GMTRickie Fowler showed he’s got plenty of gas left in the tank after a long season as he got off to a good start in the first round at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic.
The burgeoning star had 8 birdies and 2 bogies in his first round that included 33’s both going out and coming in en route to opening round at (-6). Fowler goes off again today as the favourite as he takes (7-1) to the first tee.
Fowler had a good start to the tournament, but it was nothing like the lights out performance put up by journeyman Chris Stroud. The 28-year old made 5 birdies on the front and another 5 tweeters on the back on his way to a tournament leading (-10) 62.
His odds reflect the impressive performance in round one as he’s now sitting at (15-1) to win after teeing off the tournament deep in the triple digits.
Tom Lehman may be getting older, but he still pops his head up every once in a while to let us know he’s still here and still has serious game. The 51-year old former major winner showed he can still keep up with the young bucks as he posted (-9) in the first round.
This hot start seems to have peeked the bookmakers interest as his odds of victory sit at (20-1). Considering we haven’t really heard from Lehman all season it would certainly add some drama if he can stay in the mix on the back nine Sunday.
Finally, along the lines of longer odds and a little long in the tooth, Fred Funk is in the field this week. He’s going into round two at (50-1) after a solid 68 on Thursday. Funk has been a fan favourite for decades and if he can get the crowd behind him this week it’s possible the 54-year old could turn back the clock and make a real run at the title.
