The United States have firmly pulled ahead of the Chinese Olympians and they are odds-on with virtually all major bookmakers to finish with the most gold medals. It might be confusing to some as China are ahead in the overall medal count and are, in fact, three gold medals ahead at this point; but the Americans are simply favoured to win so many more.

The bookmakers had been offering up some outside odds on other countries like Great Britain – who have out-performed expectations. As well as Russia, who have under-performed up to this point. The odds on the other nations are gone, with only the US and China listed with any prices.
Punters will find the United States at 4/6 and that's a solid price for those still seeking some value. The Chinese, who were heavily-favoured for much of the first half of the Olympics, are available at an 11/10 price tag.
The market for most European gold medals has been effectively shut with Great Britain pulling off a tremendous upset for anybody who was keeping an eye on that particular market. Going into the 2012 Olympics, Russia had been considered the prohibitive favourite. At one point, they were listed as short as a 4/11 price but Britain pulled off a spectacular surge and battled their way to the outright favourite's position.
After Saturday's incredible performance, every bookmaker closed up their market – leaving Britain in an unassailable position.
With the 2012 Olympics now more than half over, the attention is turning to the 2020 Summer Olympics. There are currently three different nations that are really in the hunt to host the Summer Olympics after Brazil 2016.
As it currently stands, the betting favourite to host the 2020 Summer Olympics is Tokyo – with a 4/6 listing being floated over at Ladbrokes. The other contenders include both Madrid and Istanbul, Turkey. The bookmakers have them listed at 3/1 and other odds will be coming in on cities that put their hats into the ring. There are rumours that Paris is thinking about having a go.
