Latest Odds on Euro 2012 England Captain

It seems as though this is really the final straw for John Terry as the FA have officially confirmed that he will no longer be the England captain going forward. Unwilling to resign from the position, Terry was stripped of it this morning and it is currently unknown whether he will be in the team for Euro 2012 or not.

Obviously the racial abuse incident with Anton Ferdinand is weighing heavily on the minds of the FA and, likely, amongst players as well. Many observers believed that Terry's presence at World Cup 2010 after fall-out from his relationship with Wayne Bridge's wife, contributed to the team's poor performance and was, at the very last, considered to be a dividing force.

We all know that this means some very active betting markets and a great opportunity to cash in a Stan James Euro 2012 Bonus.

Steven Gerrard has been named as the interim captain and is believed to be the betting favourite to retain the position heading into Euro 2012. It will be interesting to see if he hangs onto the position because he's not exactly Mr. Squeaky Clean himself and the FA may be looking for a fresh start with a new England captain heading into the European fixtures this summer.

There is also the fact that they may be looking for a long-term captain to see England through to the next World Cup and it appears as though Gerrard may not be in the picture that late in his career – at least not starting every match.

The idea of a new younger captain is emerging as a distinct possibility.

Stanjames.com have listed a market this morning and they've floated Steven Gerrard at a 6/4 listing to be the England captain for the first fixture at Euro 2012. Former captain Rio Ferdinand is priced out at 3/1 while Gareth Barry (a relative steady-Eddie) is just behind at a 7/2 listing. Ferdinand has distanced himself from the spot but Barry will be in the frame certainly.

Joe Hart would be an interesting selection but you don't think that England would engage a keeper as their captain. He's listed at 4/1 nonetheless and remains competitive. Franke Lampard is perhaps a bit too old and trades at 10/1 while Ashley Cole sits at 12/1.

Scott Parker is a very interesting option for the job and probably fits the mould better than many. He's trading at 16/1 and looks a solid wager at this point.
