Quarter Final Action at Lakeside
- By Jaymes Monte on January 6, 2011 11:52 GMTBDO World Champion Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams is in action this evening as the quarter-finals stage begins at Lakeside.
Two-time World Champion Adams faces 21-year-old Ross Smith who is competing in the event for only the second time in his career. On his only other appearance Scott Waites knocked him out in the first round without the youngster winning a set.
This time around he has already beaten 2009 finalist Tony O’Shea in the first round and Dutchman Willy van de Wiel in the second round.
However, he will need to raise his game another notch if he is to prolong his run in the tournament past the quarter-final stage.
Wolfie was forced into a final set shoot out against John Walton in his second round match but emerged from it with his quest for a third world title still intact. The bookmakers are making him a short 1/6 to go through to the semi-finals for the seventh year in a row and 5/4 to become the first player to win back-to-back titles since Raymond van Barneveld achieved the feat in 1999.
The night’s other match is a lot more closely matched in the eyes of the bookmakers. Gary Robson has been one of the form players so far in this tournament and has already defeated last year’s beaten finalist Dave Chisnall in the second round of the tournament.
His opponent is Welshman Martin Phillips who enjoyed a run to the semi-final of the event last year. His quick throwing style makes him a player that is easy on the eye and when he gets into a rhythm he can be devastating.
The bookmakers can’t separate the pair and are quoting odds of 5/6 on each player winning the race to five sets.
The winners of tonight’s two quarter-finals will face each other on Saturday for a place in the final.
