Arsenal Set for Several Signings as Transfer Window Looms

After enduring their biggest humiliation in well over a century, at the hands of Manchester United no less, Arsenal have jumped headlong into the transfer market – much to the reassurance of their fans. The names coming in and the names confirmed do not appear to be panic buys either as the likes of Per Mertesacker – long fancied by Arsene Wenger – looks set to finally put pen to paper. The German will be welcome relief for a defence that looked worse than shambolic at times during Sunday's encounter at Old Trafford.

The only potential “panic buy” that Arsenal have been linked with would likely be Clint Dempsey of Fulham, but those reports are only rumor at this point with neither club nor player confirming any approach. They are also said to have failed in a bid to sign Chelsea's Yossi Benayoun – who is also being linked with a return to Liverpool.

Another key player, Gary Cahill has seen his Arsenal chances fade away with a number of media sources now reporting that Arsenal have ended their interest in the Englishman and are opting for Mertesacker and several other lower-priced signings.

Tottenham Hotspur remain in the mix for Cahill's signature.

South Korean fans will also be rejoicing as Arsenal have confirmed the signing of South Korean captain Chu Young Park, who arrives from AS Monaco. Park is confirmed to wear the #9 shirt and add some versatility and bite to the attack at the Emirates.

The Gunners have also been linked with the impressive Mario Gotze who is enjoying plenty of attention at Borussia Dortmund and he is viewed by many as one of the most impressive and promising young players this side of Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison.

Left back Andre Santos has just been confirmed as an Arsenal player as well and he will add some poise and pace to left side of defence.

It will be interesting to see if the players gel together properly and whether they will be able to stay off the treatment table. If Arsenal's new signings – who all have reputations for staying relatively injury-free – find themselves in the physicians office all the time, it will serve as further indictment to what might be rotten at Arsenal. Arsene Wenger has done well to sign some big names for reasonable prices with little time left, but getting this team to play together and getting them integrated quickly is going to be the biggest test he's faced in a while.
