After a stellar weekend of English Premier League action, we still have a solitary match to look forward to on Monday with Liverpool playing host to Newcastle in a match that could have permutations for both of these teams chances next season.

We are definitely getting down to that crunch time of year where teams either kick on and make the best of it - moving up the table with a late surge - or they wind up faltering and dropping places, with some even tumbling into the relegation mire for the first time at exactly the wrong time of year. 

With the Champions position seemingly dusted here as Chelsea have pulled off a steady string of 1-0 victories lately - enough to see them through to the end of the season without some type of epic collapse - it now appears as though the main battle is for the final Champions League spot with Liverpool a little bit off the pace and much more likely to push on for Europa League qualification. 

There is a distinct chance that Liverpool could put something together in order to pip fourth place from both Southampton and Manchester City but that would require them to probably pick up all remaining points in the league while counting on both the south coasters to falter and Manuel Pellegrini’s men to continue their slide down the table from second. 

Newcastle were playing some pretty decent stuff about midway through the season but that all changed as soon as Alan Pardew bid the club adieu and ventured off to Crystal Palace - a move that didn’t make a huge amount of sense to many barring Pardew’s previous association.
