MCCLAREN COULD RETURN AS ENGLAND MANAGER

Football dominates the sports headlines today with Sir Trevor Brooking refusing to rule out a former England manager for the role in the future and a boardroom takeover on the cards at Liverpool.
The FA’s Director of Football development Trevor Brooking has said that it would be unfair to hold England’s failure against Steve McClaren when the manager’s job becomes available again. Current manager Fabio Capello is set to step down when his contract ends following England’s Euro2012 campaign and betting markets are already available regarding who will be named his successor
Harry Redknapp is the popular choice and remains the betting favourite across the board of bookmakers. Roy Hodgson and Stuart Pearce vie for second favouritism, although the former’s credentials will depend largely upon whether he can turn around Liverpool’s waning fortunes.
If you think that the rest of the FA would be willing to sanction the return of Steve McClaren then you can get odds of 50/1 at Paddy Power on the man once dubbed ‘the wally with the brolly’ returning to the England dugout.
The other main story of the day is that Boston Red Sox owner John W Henry and his partners in New England Sports Ventures are reportedly set to takeover Liverpool Football Club. However, current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks don’t appear to be going quietly and have attempted a boardroom coup to block the sale.
It has been a catastrophic season so far for Liverpool as they languish in the unfamiliar surroundings of the relegation zone, but today’s news offers a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
Liverpool are now shorter odds – 16/1 with Victor Chandler – to be relegated than they are to finish in the top two – 20/1.
