Next Liverpool Manager Betting Odds: Dalglish Out

There appears to be a significant gamble underway on Roberto Martinez now that Kenny Dalglish has officially resigned his position at Liverpool. The Wigan Athletic manager was just spotted as low as 7/4 with Ladbrokes to take the reigns at Anfield.

The news that Dalglish was leaving Liverpool rocketed around the footballing press and bookmakers were quick to unleash this new market at a time when the fixtures are few and far between. There's a lot to like about this wager because it looks like something they will want to resolve quickly as opposed to letting it drag out through the summer.

The general management at Liverpool is going to adopt a business minded approach to this one and they'll likely opt for something safer than another wild card play. The key is not to go too safe – Roy Hodgson, anybody – but catching a good manager on the up is a much better prospect of another big-money name looking for a victory lap.

Needless to say, Rafa Benitez's name is already being thrown around and he's amongst a cadre of contenders floating at 7/1 or 8/1. They include Fabio Capello at 7/1, which isn't totally out of the question, while Jose Mourinho trades at 8/1 with Andre Villas-Boas also listed at an identical price. Brendan Rogers and Carlo Ancelotti can be backed at 10/1.

The real wild card in this one is Josep Guardiola who has just left Barca. What a coup it would be for the Liverpool brass to bring in an exciting young manager of his calibre. He's not out of the question at a 14/1 price but you reckon that word would have gotten out already. It could be that the longer this chase goes on, the better it looks for Guardiola.

He would certainly excite the fans a bit more than Paul Lambert – the other contender priced at 14/1.

Sven Goran Eriksson is priced at 33/1 alongside Kevin Keegan, Graeme Souness and Didier Deschamps.
