Women’s World Cup England vs Canada PT 1

There are seemingly plenty of different international football tournaments unfolding each day this summer and, while we don’t have the big names you’d normally see in a Euro or World Cup competition, we do have the Women’s World Cup, Copa America and Under 21 Championships all happening at the same time.

We are now well into the knock-out stages for the Women’s World Cup, which is being played in a variety of different locations in Canada, and England have their women deeper into the competition than they have ever been before.

There is a lot to like about this match between them and Canada - and also the rest of the competition as well because Women’s Football seems to be very top-heavy with the matches between the top five or six teams generally quite watchable while many of the others can appear lopsided due to the gulf in quality between the top sides and those which are more ordinary.

The Canadian and English coaches are both English and have been back and forth with some banter throughout the last few days as England’s coach pointed out that the Canadian side have been the beneficiaries of some very generous refereeing decisions, likely due to the fact that they are playing in front of their home crowd in virtually every match.

Canada themselves have not been at their hard-hitting best this tournament with two wins and two draws putting them through to the play-off stage of the competition but they were only able to score a single goal in each of their victories. While the Canadian women are due to get a lot of credit from football observers for staying organized and disciplined with their defence, the simple fact is that you need to be able to score goals to beat the likes of the United States and Japan.
