China added a flurry of medals on Friday, including a pair of golds, and they have pulled ahead of the United States – who were just a step ahead at one point on Thursday. The two-horse race for medals is dominating the Olympic headlines and it looks to be an out-and-out street fight until the competition ends.

On day 8 of 17, there is still plenty of very interesting action left to come with many of the longer competitions looking like they're going to trend in the Americans direction.
Korea are currently sitting in the third position, which will surprise many, even though they are behind France in terms of total medals they do have more golds and that gives them the edge in this race. Their neighbours North Korea remain in the top 10 and they have a total of five medals, but 4 golds and a bronze make up their constitution. They stand ahead of 20 medal Russia, who only have the mere 3 gold medals.
Kazakhstan, Italy, Germany and the UK round out the rest of the top ten.
As mentioned in previous articles, only the United States and China have a genuine chance of winning the Gold Medal race and we've seen the Chinese team taken into a slimmer price of 8/11 right now. The United States trade at even money and they're down from the 3/1 they were listed at not too long ago. For much of the previous week, they hovered around 7/4.
You can still back Russia and Great Britain to somehow win this at 100/1.
Britain is now the favourite to dominate the European countries in terms of gold medals and this is endemic of an under-performing Russian side this year. They had been the prohibitive favourites going in – listed as low as 4/11 and now they are a full 5/4 with Britain priced out at around 8/11.
There are more than a few competitions still remaining that definitely favour British entries so you can bank on them adding to the gold medal tally. Keep an eye on the Russians in the upcoming gymnastics competitions though.
