Saturday Premier League Preview
- By Jaymes Monte on February 11, 2011 12:44 GMTThis Saturday has a lot to live up to following the record-breaking day of action that we witnessed in the Premier League just seven days ago.
It all kicks off with the Manchester derby where the chasing pack will be keen to see anything but a United win. Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham will all be hoping that last week’s defeat to Wolves turns out to be the catalyst for a slump in United’s form.
But they’ll need to start taking advantage of any mishaps that United’s side suffer if they are to stop the Red Devils claiming a record 19th English football league title.
Arsenal host Wolves this weekend as they look to put last weekend’s debacle at St James’ Park behind them. Depending on the result of the Manchester derby a win for the Gunners would either help them keep pace with United or could even move them to within a point of the summit of the Premier League.
They are quoted at odds of 1/4 to beat a Wolves side that have picked up just four points from a possible 36 on the road so far this season. The Wanderers are 14/1 to complete an unlikely double over the league’s top two and it is 11/2 the game ends in a draw.
Liverpool continued their resurgence under Kenny Dalglish with a deserved 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge last Sunday. This weekend they host a Wigan side that are struggling at the wrong end of the table but could climb out of the relegation zone with a victory at Anfield.
That looks extremely unlikely however and the bookmakers are going 8/1 about The Latics taking all three points. Dalglish has stopped Liverpool conceding goals and installed the belief that they can grind out results when necessary. The Reds are 2/5 to continue their ascendency with three points here.
The big battle at the bottom of the table is between West Brom and West Ham. The Baggies have today appointed Roy Hodgson as their new manager but the former Liverpool and Fulham gaffer won’t formally take over until next week leaving Michael Appleton to take charge of this crucial relegation six pointer.
West Brom are above the relegation zone by virtue of goal difference only while The Hammers would go above their opponents and possibly out of the relegation zone with all three points.
