2013 Royal Ascot Wednesday Betting Preview Part 3

The interesting entry is The Fugue, a four-year-old bay or brown filly who lines up for John Gosden’s yard. She is unraced since being sent off as the favourite in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare’s turf contest at Santa Anita last November. Clearly pointed at this race for quite some time and using it as a seasonal debut - you have to respect the connections here for making such an aggressive move.

She finished a credible second last year in the Ribblesdale Stakes before kicking on well to win the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s four-year-old is by Dansili out...

The second race of the day is the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes and we’ve only got a field of 11 to navigate here. There is plenty of form coming into it and the interesting option might be Duntle, who has taken four races on the bounce despite a DQ in her last effort.

That was a Group 1 contest and there was just a little bit too much interference down the lane for the liking of the stewards, which is what saw her get taken down. She has run very credibly in her native Ireland and has, in fact, won better races than this.

Wednesday at Royal Ascot is seldom considered to be the best day of the festival but you can still expect some very interesting betting races to unfold over the six contests on the day. With just a solitary Group 1 contest up for grabs, there are some very tricky Group 2, 3 and listed contests along with some very big fields to make the potential payouts especially appealing.

The opening day’s contest is the Jersey Stakes, a Group 3 effort going 7f. Undefeated Ajraam, a son of Daaher out of a Danehill mare, has taken two races on the bounce and will be coming into this...

The Coventry Stakes is always a massive cavalry charge and is an impressive race if you can actually figure out the winner. Stubbs is taking the bulk of the action at this point and trades at a competitive 4/1, though some might find that’s a bit too short of a price when backing a race with so many different contenders.

Championship looks an interesting option and will certainly take money at 6/1. Take a gander at Coach House as well with an 8/1 price tag while Sir John Hawkins trades at an identical price alongside Wahaab.

Expect Animal Kingdom to be used heavily in accumulator bets and the sheer fact that it’s the first race of the day and the festival itself always means that the race is overbet. There is plenty of solid action on the Tuesday card as well with both the Coventry Stakes and the Kings Stand set to offer up some interesting handicapping challenges to punters far and wide.

Revolutionary is currently slugging it out with Oxbow for the role of second favourite and key spoiler to Orb’s chances of picking up a pair of TC stakes. Revolutionary skipped the Preakness but mustered up a credible third in the Kentucky Derby with a third place finish by just over a length. Prior to that he had really made a name for himself by gutting out two tough victories in key Derby preps - oftentimes looking beat at the top of the stretch but still getting up to win.

There is a lot to like about the final leg of the American Triple Crown and, though we still haven’t seen a proper Triple Crown winner since the late 70s, punters will still be lining up to take a crack at the big day of action at Belmont Park this Saturday. The feature contest appears to be a fascinating showdown between Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Preakness winner Oxbow.

A face-off between two very dynamic jockeys - Orb’s pilot Joel Rosario has only emerged in the last few years but has rapidly become viewed as the best finisher in horse racing. Having captured the Dubai World Cup with Animal Kingdom back...

La Fortuna looks to be one who might be able to move forward in this contest having acquitted herself quite well when running at Epsom back in April. She was beaten by just a slim head when sent off at 10/1 and that was only her first effort of the season. You can expect her to move forward off the 6 week freshening and keep doing well over a course she has always seemed to enjoy.

The fourth leg is the 3:30 at Musselburgh and this one has a few talented runners in it competing for a relatively tidy prize. Take a look at the well-handicapped Grandorio who was a beaten...

He was raced in touch for much of the contest and then made very strong headway about 2f from the line and pulled it off by an impressive three-lengths. He’ll enjoy having a solid pace to aim at and doesn’t want to deal with much traffic trouble.

Sheikh Hamdan has Matrooh in this one and he’s also coming in off a similar maiden score at Doncaster against a 17-strong field. Sent off as the 2/1 choice, he won the race by a solid length and looked fairly good doing it. Proven at a mile and without really having done much wrong in his first race (a fourth from...
