Thunder Strike by Sakhee’s Secret looks to be a fascinating selection and comes into the race after taking two scores from two efforts and getting the Hughes/Hannon combo never hurts matters either. Sent off as the betting favourite in his two lifetime efforts, it is worth noting that his last win, a conditions stakes at Windsor, only had three entrants. It will be interesting to see how he deals with a larger field like the one on offer today.

With extra excitement expected at Epsom because of the Derby classic running as the final leg of this contest, you will likely see a bit more attention than usual.

You do reckon there will be a number of punters trying to beat her though, with Moth and Liber Nauticus trading just behind her at 3/1 price tags. Moth chased home Sky Lantern to finish third by two lengths in the 1000 Guineas and she really did endure a tough trip on the day - something that may have prevented her from genuinely doing her best. She was steadied at the start and then had some traffic trouble as they were getting down to the business end of the contest - she surged late and showed a good turn of foot, as well as a good deal of bravery, to do her best to chase home the impressive Sky Lantern.

2013 Investec Oaks Betting Preview Part 1

Thursday, May 30, 2013 - 16:18

In contrast to the 2013 Investec Derby, the Oaks looks to be a much more wide open affair without a prohibitive favourite dominating the market in advance of the contest. Expect a lot of interesting market moves as we get closer to the off on Friday. There is a lot to like about the race and there are a lot of extremely formful fillies taking part in the contest.

As it currently stands, Secret Gesture reigns supreme as the 9/4 favourite - a joint partnership between Qatar Racing and Newsells Park Stud. Bred at Newsells and trained by Ralph Beckett, the Galileo filly has only captured a listed contest so far but looked...

Coolmore also have a Galileo contender in the mix here and he’s making his third start in less than a month for this race. At the moment, Magician has the Irish 2000 Guineas under his belt already - having taken it at a 10/3 listing against a talented field of ten. Prior to that he had taken the Group 3 Dee Stakes at Chester.

He boasts a textbook stalking style and punters can expect to see that deployed in the Epsom Derby. Based on where the draw places him in respect to Dawn Approach, you can expect him to probably stay at or around the favourite if possible.

They boast a similar type of in-race placement...

As it currently stands punters can get a 5/1 price on Battle of Marengo and that’s likely because he simply hasn’t been beaten by Dawn Approach yet. He boasts plenty of upside but also has a particular amount of downside because of being raced primarily in Ireland against very limited fields.

His most recent races have had fields of five and four, respectively.

Battle of Marengo will probably deliver more value on the day of the race as bookmakers will be adjusting prices based on relatively heavy volume coming in on the betting favourite. A price of 7/1...

2013 Investec Derby Betting Tips Part 2

The bookmakers expect to do brisk business on Dawn Approach on the day, with a late crush of money expected once he makes a good pre-race appearance and gets a decent surface to work with during the race. There is a lot to like about his chances and he put away his challengers in the Guineas with real panache.

The fact remains that Dawn Approach used the Guineas as his seasonal debut and will be much more improved in his second effort off a lengthy freshening after scoring the Dewhurst back in October. He demonstrated the ability to turn around back to back Group 1’s within less than a month’s time when he...

Following his sensational five length score in the 2000 Guineas, Dawn Approach is now headlining a very intriguing iteration of the Investec Derby and the bookmakers have him as low as 5/6 to capture the second classic of the year.

From a business standpoint, his incredible series of seven scores on the bounce makes him a hot breeding prospect no matter what the result of this contest is, but Guineas glory was a more important moral score for Godolphin.

Chiefly because it came at a...

Epsom Derby Betting Preview

Tuesday, May 7, 2013 - 16:04

After Dawn Approach captured the 2013 2000 Guineas on Saturday, we saw the gauntlet truly thrown down for the widely-anticipated Epsom Derby on June 1st. After seeing a number of other contenders trading as the favourites in the ante post market over the past few months, Dawn Approach has firmly stamped it as his own with the Godolphin runner available at a 7/4 listing.

Several bookmakers offer up Dawn Approach at 13/8 and that price is likely to drop unless any complications emerge after...

Red Cadeaux was also on our short-list but is being campaigned primarily in Asia at the moment so may remain over there or have some complications from constant international shipping considering how early he started his season this year. Cavalryman is a safe Godolphin horse to back and he looks like he will assert himself over 2m for the duration of the season.
