Easily one of the most intriguing betting races of the entire year, the latest iteration of the Arlington Million is set to offer up plenty of excitement this coming weekend as one of the premier preps for the Breeders’ Cup Turf is finally set to get underway. An interesting selection of European shippers fly stateside for this one every year and the 2013 edition of the race is no exception.
Outstrip, the Godolphn entry, is also a maiden winner having captured a tough race at Newmarket when sent off at 4/1. Charlie Appleby will have this Darley-bred son of Exceed And Excel ready to roll for this one and he’s been off for about five weeks which should be to his liking. Outstrip is a 5/1 shot at this point.
American racing fans will recognzie the silks of Recanted, who turns out in the Paul Reddam silks. The owner of I’ll Have Another nearly captured the American...
Cap O’Rushes is the highest rated contender here and he has some credible claims despite not really finding the line much lately. Roger Varian saddles up Elkaayed, a son of Distorted Humor, and they have Paul Hanagan booked for the mount once again. Sheikh Hamdan’s charge managed a fifth place finish at Ascot in a Group 3 but the victory at Doncaster before that looked a lot better.
He trades at a 9/2 price in the market right now and the out-and-out favourite appears to be Excess Knowledge, who is available at a 2/1 price and you reckon that he’...
It remains to be seen whether he really can kick on here in another flat contest but his connections have placed him here for a reason. He is 20/1 in the market right now with Broxbourne looking like the probable favourite with a price that trades at around 6/1 at this point.
Broxbourne is well-weighted for this contest despite coming in fresh off a victory at Ascot this past weekend. It reflects well on him that they are turning out the son of Refuse To Bend so quickly, especially after taking the highest purse he has ever run in. He has been an all-weather warrior for quite...
Expect plenty of action and excitement on day two of Glorious Goodwood. There is a lot to like about the day’s action as the big feature contest, the 2013 Sussex Stakes, is set for its latest iteration. There are some extremely talented runners set to tackle that 1m distance and the hype and buzz is all surrounding the latest showdown between Dawn Approach and Toronado.
While the focus is obviously on the major Group 1, which runs as the third contest of the day, there are plenty of other excellent money-making opportunities up for grabs to the savvy punter.
The first contest of the day is a long distance...
Declaration of War was second to Al Kazeem in the Coral Eclipse and the War Front colt looks to be getting some consistency after making the big step up to Group 1 level. He captured the Queen Anne Stakes, which gave him his first Group 1 score, and the second place finish to Al Kazeem is nothing to be ashamed of.
Considering the price of the top two fancies, Declaration of War will probably take some money on the day with that 9/2 price sure to look more attractive than the 5/6 you can expect the leading pair to be hovering around.
Trade Storm is 33/1 shot who is looking likely to be satisfied with a...
While we may have a limited field set up for the 2013 iteration of the Qipco Sussex Stakes, there will be no shortage of quality on display during Wednesday’s race. There is a lot to like about this contest and the main story line heading into this one is the battle between Dawn Approach and Toronado - they have tangled twice this year with Dawn Approach getting the better of Toronado each time.
With both contenders priced relatively short for this one - Dawn Approach is 11/10 while Toronado is a slim 6/4 - some punters may want to put their bets elsewhere as they look to find a bit of extra value.
Golden Soul must come back to his impressive effort in the Kentucky Derby if he’s going to be taken serious as a top contender in this generation. A ninth place finish in the Belmont wasn’t what connections were looking for but jockey Robby Albarado is back for another effort here. He looks like he would be helped by a sloppy surface but weather reports how that he has it all to do.
Oxbow has a legendary group of connections as the Calumet Farm-owned son of Awesome Again has been lying in wait for trainer D. Wayne Lukas since capturing the Grade 1 Preakness and coming in a tight second in the Belmont Stakes.
He ranks amongst the speediest of contenders and looks to be getting good at just the right time. He looks like he will be suited to the distance but the fact remains that he has never won at exactly 9 furlongs. He has always scored at just a bit more or just a bit less and you also have to wonder how he’s going to do if he tangles on the front end with Verrazano.
The Kentucky Derby (where he was a disappointing 15th) still proves to be the only blemish on Verrazano’s head with five victories under his belt and scores at Grades 1,2 and 3 level. Look for him to deploy his usual press-the-pace or take the lead running style as John Velasquez takes a day off of Saratoga to ride the high-profile son of More Than Ready.
