2010 Royal Ascot Coronation Stakes and Queen’s Vase Preview
- By A.J. Ryder on June 18, 2010 04:45 GMTThere is some serious talent lining up for the 2010 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot tomorrow and this one looks like one of the tougher Group 1 puzzles to solve over this extremely exciting week of first-class racing.
The early story in this one looks to be AP O'Brien's Lillie Langtry (Danehill Dancer)- this talented filly boasts some decent results in the past but ended last year a disapointing 8th in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies turf (Where I successfully called Tapitsfly to win).
She opened this year's campaign with a solid fifth in the Irish 1000 Guineas where she didn't really get a good trip and made the most of some tough traffic problems. She's the betting favourite at 6.0, but that's a lukewarm price at best.
Godolphin's Anna Salai (Dubawi) has never finished outside 1st or 2nd spot and opened the season with a Group 3 victory at Longchamp. SHe trades at 7.0 and will likely be there-or-thereabouts.
Personally, I think the value option here is Puff (Camacho) who opened the season very strongly with a Group 3 win at Newbury over the talented Habaayib. At 21.0, I'm all over this one at that price and I expect a sharp drop tomorrow. Get in there and back her now.
The 2010 Queen's Vase sees three year-old colts going a full 2 miles on the turf and Mikhail Glinka (Galileo) is the current 3.75 betting favourite. He is placed at Group 1 level thanks to a close effort at Saint-Cloud atthe end of last year. He's a decent shout and AP O'Brien will be expecting a lot here.
Corsica (Cape Cross) is priced just behind at a 4.5 price with Ladbrokes and this Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned colt is emerging off the listed circuit and takes a step up in class here. I'm not sure about it at this price so I would wait and see if we get him around 6.0 or 6.5.
I like the looks of Moose Moran (Lemon Drop Kid) who has acquitted himself pretty well in his four career races and colts by that sire tend to stretch out well in distance around this point in their careers. I think the 21.0 price is quite generous and if there's a sleeper in this race it's Moose Moran.
