In regards to the Preakness Stakes itself, the Grade 1 contest carries a hefty $1,500,000 purse and we’ve got a pretty short field of eight here with three of the contenders really standing tall in the marketplace right now. American Pharoah will have to navigate the 1 stall but the rail draw here isn’t a huge problem considering his running style and the fact that this is Pimlico, not Churchill Downs.
He’s trading at a 4/5 margin in the morning line and he will likely go off shorter than that with a price of about 2/5 or 3/5 the most likely thing we will see. Expect Dortmund to go off shorter than his counterpart Firing Line as the cut-back in distance will really suit him.
It’s important to remember that the Preakness is half a furlong shorter than the Kentucky Derby and Dortmund tends to do his best running at under 10 furlongs if he’s up against genuinely top class competition.
Mr. Z was sold to Calumet Farms by American Pharoah’s owner just a couple of days ago and the horse remains entered in the race. What a story it would be if he was to derail AP’s run at history by spoiling a potential Triple Crown. Compounding the problem is that he’s actually named after his former owner Ahmed Zayat.
Danzig Moon was considered to be a hot outsider in the Kentucky Derby and he ran well - outperforming his odds by a good distance and encountering some traffic trouble during the crucial final furlongs. The Mark Casse-trained contender will get Julien Leparoux back for this one and they have a 15/1 price tag that makes him a good across the board shot.
Divining Rod is also proving to be a popular wise guy selection and Javier Castellano could pull off a real shock here if he gets the right type of the trip and the horse is genuinely ready to fire.
