Many were shocked as Beholder was defeated in a routine stakes race at Del Mar by her rival Stellar Wind in a relatively massive upset. She was sent off at a very slim 1/5 pari mutuel price tag and was unable to deliver as the two dueled down the lane and she was ultimately passed by her more progressive challenger – who simply had a jockey who appeared willing to dig deeper on her.
Clearly there are larger things in store for Beholder so that loss hasn't had people calling for her to be retired or to start trying more straightforward races. Look for her to continue her path towards the Classic as she makes a run at the 2016 Pacific Classic next time out.
It's worth noting that the Richard Mandella trained super mare is available as high as a 10/1 ante post listing right now for the big race at her home track of Santa Anita in the fall. There are a few books who have her floated as low as a 6/1 listing with the average price hovering around an 8/1 margin at the time of this writing.
With her connections seemingly focused on running her against males next time out – and likely continuing on towards the Pegasus World Cup in early 2017 (which is run at her preferred 9 furlong distance) this has opened up a very interesting dynamic in the market for the 2016 Breeders' Cup Distaff.
