2016 St Leger Betting Preview PT 1
- By A.J. Ryder on September 6, 2016 21:55 GMTIt looks like Doncaster racecourse could be made into Aidan O'Brien's Own Private Idaho as the St Leger is set to run this Saturday. The odds on favourite being bandied about by the bookmakers is the Galileo colt Idaho who enters fresh off a victory in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York back in mid-August, traditionally viewed as the main prep for this third English classic of the flat racing season.

Well-bred and coming out of a steady series of quality efforts behind stand out Derby winner Harzand, we have this one rounding into form at just the right time. One of the key aspects about this race, however, is that many think it could wind up being another example of a big priced selection spoiling the party for the punters in a big race.
We have seen that unfold a couple of times so far this year in a lot of the more widely-anticipated contests and the St Leger could wind up being a completely different story than it might look on paper right now.
Based on how the last race unfolded it appears as though you can expect him to sit handy but only go to the lead towards the last two furlongs or so. He'll need to be ridden relatively in touch but ina race like this you certainly don't want to move too soon. He's already banked a good amount of money for a horse who has gone 2/7 lifetime, but it's those place finishes in big money contests that add credence to his claims.
The question remains, however, whether he's worth backing to win outright at an odds-on price based on that Great Voltigeur victory when he actually comes up against some decent competition in this contest.
