2016 UAE Derby Betting Tips

The UAE Derby is the premier contest for three year old horses at the entire meeting of the Dubai Spring Carnival. This year we have a fairly small field lining up for it and that has a lot to do with the fact that the talented Polar River appears to have this one on lock down. Doug Watson's contender remains undefeated in her four efforts at Meydan and will be putting her 100% record on the line here against a solid group.

There is a spot in the 2016 Kentucky Derby on the line here to the outright winner as they effectively get a win and you're in seat for the first Saturday in May. She won the UAE Oaks by just under a length from Vale Dori when sent off at a 1/14 margin on the day as probably one of the biggest favourites of the entire meeting in Dubai.

Prior to that she was able to muster up a solid 13 length margin in the UAE 1000 Guineas and a 5 length victory in the 1000 Guineas Trial. Right now you will find her trading at a pretty solid price tag of about 4/6 with most major European bookmakers. You can bank on that price getting hammered on the day – particularly if she is making a very good pre-race appearance.

Mike De Kock trains Vale Dori as the second best contender and you'll find her priced out at a price as high as 11/2 in the ante post markets right now. She has only been out once this year in a second place finish and will need to improve on that significantly if she's going to make any type of an impression here and will likely have to rely on a mistake from the leading favourite.

American invader Frank Conversation lines up in this one and the Doug O'Neill trained contender will be seeking his third score on the bounce. The son of Quality Road has been absolutely bossing it up at Golden Gate Fields in San Francisco, capturing the California Derby by a solid margin and then taking the El Camino Real Derby against a slightly tougher field. It's worth remembering that Golden Gate is not where California's premier contenders run – that's at Santa Anita – but this group have a reputation of being able to ship and win in a lot of different locations and you can expect Mario Gutierrez to make an impression here.

Look for Frank Conversation anywhere between 8/1 and a 10/1 margin.

Japanese sensation Lani has been talked about as a possible Kentucky Derby contender for quite some time now and this will be his first run outside of Japan with an eye on the first Saturday in May. He was beaten on his seasonal debut at Tokyo – only able to finish a tame fifth place when sent off at a 13/5 margin back in mid-Feburary.

Punters will find him trading as high as a 14/1 margin.
