The first, and most continually overbet, race of the first day at Cheltenham always seems to be the Supreme Novices Huedle – one of the most competitive 2m competitions you will see over fences anywhere. Thereis a lot to like about this year's iteration of the race and we are beginning to see a move towards a definable favourite after several months of question marks over who would wind up being the betting choice for the big festival kick off.

With the punters warming up to Melon, we have begun to see him break out of the pack of contenders that were all priced around the 6/1-10/1 corridor.

He's only got one race under his belt but it was a smashing 10 length victory at Leopardstown over a tough group of 13 contenders. It's worth noting tha he was a flat winner in his native France and boasts plenty of natural speed. Despite having just won a maiden race, it's pretty clear to see that there is still a lot more to come from this one and the five year old son of Medician could wind up being a real kick start to a lot of people's festival bankrolls.

One of the big rivals appears to be the likes of Moon Racer – a late blooming eight year old coming out of David Pipe's yard. He had been a real solid runner in bumpers, actually winning the Champion Bumper back in 2015 but then he was off for a year, making a second place return to Punchestown last year for the only actual blemish on his race record.

He has been out twice already this year, capturing both races, and it's worth noting that the seasonal debut involved the defeat of last year's bumper winner Ballyandy – who will also be in the mix for this one as well. He followed that up with a victory at Cheltenham in a trial for this race – making it his first Graded victory.
