2018 Dubai Golden Shaheen Preview
- By A.J. One of the biggest and most impressive contests every year is the Dubai Golden Shaheen and there is a lot of credibility that this year could see another really interesting iteration of the race.
This year, we have a really fascinating contest set to unfold with Roy H looming as the significant favourite and looking to head to Dubai to build on his impressive victory in the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar last year.
His excellent record has also been punctuated by a victory in the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes at Santa Anita to kick off his seasonal debut in good effect. Another Peter Miller contender with greater designs on a Dubai raid, this six-year-old has won his last three efforts and will be coming into this race trading as an outright favourite in international markets.
He’s going to be doing battle against another high profile American contender in X Y Jet, with three victories in a row also under his belt. He has been campaigned primarily at Tampa Bay Downs and Monmouth Park - the preferred tracks of his controversial trainer Jorge Navarro.
The other major contender here is last year’s winner Mind Your Biscuits who is another solid American runner who deserves a lot of respect and trades at a relatively high price to get the job done here in good order.
Other notables include Reynaldothewizard and Jordan Sport - who could both spring a surprise here if the top contenders hook up into an early speed duel.
