2018 Pegasus World Cup Update PT 1
- By A.J. Ryder on January 22, 2018 17:29 GMTWe are less than a week away from the world’s richest thoroughbred race as the Pegasus World Cup is set to run at Gulfstream Park for the second time. It looks like it will be the final race for current world #1 Gun Runner - who has rattled off a steady stream of victories over the last year or so after losing out to Arrogate in last year’s Dubai World Cup.
In fact, many of the other runners in this big race are using the Pegasus World Cup as a prep - a rather high stakes one it must be admitted - for that big contest in the middle east in March.
Looking at the ante post odds right now, you’ll find that Gun Runner ranks as the odds-on favourite across the board with virtually every top bookmaker based in Europe. There is a lot to like about his chances but the fact that the race is contested over nine furlongs, as opposed to his preferred ten, makes things a bit more complicated for him.
Right now, you’ll find a best price of about 10/11 on Gun Runner with the majority of bookmakers going to an 8/11 or a 4/6.
The price tags on the likes of West Coast and Collected - the two contenders who helped round out the top placings in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic behind Gun Runner - are the two next shortest here and you’ll find both Bob Baffert trainees trading at around a 5/1-7/1 corridor for West Coast while Collected can be backed at a price of about 5/1 to 8/1.
