The long distance race is considered to be the top staying race of the global calendar aside from the Melbourne Cup, which also boasts a much larger purse. There is an extra two furlongs to tackle in this massive battle though and the fields tends to be rather short since there is only a specific type of horse who can actually contest a race like this.
It’s probably not a big surprise that the betting favourite is Stradivarius and he can be backed around an 11/8 best price with several bookmakers though it’s likely that he will go off at a slightly shorter listing on the day of the race itself. This will be exacerbated if he makes a really solid pre-race appearance.
Cross Counter is also considered to be a force to be reckoned with and he’s trading around a 4/1 margin at the moment with a number of top bookmakers. He’s shown plenty of ability and is a solid selection at the distance though he doesn’t boast quite the resume that Stradivarius does.
Dee Ex Bee is the next best-priced contender and the only other horse in the mix with a single digit price. You’ll find him available around a 7/1 listing right now. Flag of Honour is a 12/1 shout with a number of top bookmakers and he looks like a really interesting each-way shout with that price - particularly if you can find a book that is paying four places.
