There is good reason for Tacitus being considered the outright favourite since so many of the specific trends from past years play into his favour. First and foremost, he’s by Tapit and they tend to have the ability to carry their speed a mile and a half at this stage in their three-year-old season. They also have the habit of being hard to handle so if the horse appears settled and focused before the race then we could see him win by a considerable distance if he’s able to prevail against this competitive field.
There aren’t too many established stars hanging around from the Kentucky Derby where we saw one of the most controversial finishes in history as Maximum Security was taken down to see 67/1 Country House emerge as the ultimate winner, setting off a debate that is still yet to subside.
War of Will showed that he was a force to be reckoned with after capturing the Preakness and looming large on the rest of the three-year-old crop as one of the few to actually contest all three legs of the Triple Crown.
The ante post markets currently have Tacitus available around a 2.75 margin to pull off the victory and there’s a decent chance that he could be a higher price than that on the US tote once the actual race rolls around. There will be a lot of whispers and discussion about who could be set to spring a potential surprise as the additional two furlongs of distance makes Belmont the true test of the champion and that plays into the races reputation as a place where long shots can make their impression.
