2019 Kentucky Derby Betting Update PT 1
- By A.J. Ryder on March 26, 2019 17:57 GMTThere have been a number of Kentucky Derby preps unfolding each weekend during the build up to the first Saturday in May. This year’s Derby trail has been one of the most tumultuous in quite a while with the temporary closure of Santa Anita combined with a number of longshot contenders landing guaranteed slots in the Kentucky Derby thanks to the points system.

California-based horses have been dominating the Derby over the past couple of years and a few of the outright favourites in the 2019 Kentucky Derby ante post market are looking to continue that trend.
As it currently stands, you’ll find that Game Winner is considered to be the outright favourite despite a number of Grade 1 winners emerging on the Derby Trail. So far, there are plenty of interesting contenders but nobody has been able to unseat Game Winner - who won last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile for trainer Bob Baffert - from his seat atop the Derby prospect list.
Right now, you’ll find him trading at a best price of 7/1 in the betting markets and he is definitely going to go off at a shorter price than that on the day should he make it into the gate at Churchill Downs. A few bookmakers have taken him down to 5/1 and that price could go shorter as we get closer to the race over the next week or two.
There is also a lot to like about Improbable despite him getting beaten in his last race and that hasn’t shaken the bookmakers doubts in his ability to potentially win the race and go off at a relatively short price.
