As it currently stands, the bookmakers have two horses trading as the outright favorites in the ante-post markets. You'll find that last year's Breeders Cup juvenile winner Game Winner was trading as the favorite throughout most of the Derby prep season and he has now been joined by the exciting Richard Mandella-trained Contender Omaha Beach.
Omaha Beach was able to put in a very impressive Performance in his last outing in the Arkansas Derby. He was able to dispose of several widely vaunted favorites and appeared to gallop out very well, handling the muddy surface easily which bodes nicely for Kentucky Derby Day.
Right now, you'll find both of these contenders trading around a 7/1 price tag with most major bookmakers and they are surely to go off at much shorter prices on the American tote on the day of the Kentucky Derby. There probably won't be too many more significant to sections out of the race over the next week or so unless we see if you withdraw after the post position draw actually unfolds towards the middle of next week.
There are a number of Challengers out there who have the ability to defeat either game winner or Omaha Beach and many of them are trading at relatively plausible prices to do so. The biggest pretender to the crown appears to be the Talented Bob Baffert-trained contender Roadster.
