2019 Whitney Stakes Betting Preview PT 1

One of the biggest feature races of the American summer racing season at the much-vaunted Saratoga Springs is the Whitney Handicap and this year it carries a very special distinction as one of the matriarch’s of American thoroughbred racing, Marylou Whitney, passed away over the last weekend and her absence will loom large over the race.

A major presence in the American turf scene and one of the countries most prominent philanthropists one of the best ways to pay homage to her legacy is with an extremely memorable contest unfolding in the namesake race for the famous family that she married into.

With this being one of the premier contests for older horses who prefer to tackle the classic distance of 1m2f, it appears as though Bob Baffert’s charge McKinzie is trading as the outright favourite to win the Grade 1 contest in upstate New York. McKinzie has been an interesting sort over the past few years and has been tricky to wager on, at times disappointing the punters when being sent off as the outright favourite to win the race.

There will be a few really interesting contenders looking to take him on here and not the least of which is Thunder Snow, who has trading as a 7/2 second choice and looks likely to pick up the pieces if the west coast favourite is unable to muster up the type of performance that it will take to win this prestigious race.

The Godolphin trainee has a stellar record and is one of the biggest earners in the world who is still currently racing - mostly thanks to his heroic performance in the Dubai races he has tackled. He deserves a lot of plaudits for his ability to grind out victories at the right time and this could be one of those instances.
