Now that we have completed the preliminary entries for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup world championships at Keeneland this year, there is a lot of interesting movement in the betting markets as the biggest flat races of the season will be decided in Kentucky in early November.

The Breeders’ Cup Turf is going to be especially solid this year with a good selection of European contenders venturing over the Atlantic to pursue the 1m4f distance. The turf contests are going to be interesting this year as Keeneland has gone out of their way to ensure the course is as forgiving as possible since they have not had a huge amount of rain in Kentucky this fall. 

Ballydoyle’s Magical is expected to come into the race as the betting favourite on the heels of a third place finish in the Champions Stakes at Ascot last weekend. Prior to that he was victorious in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown so there will be no concerns over the distance here. The bookmakers have him at a best price of 11/4 and he will likely be shorter on the day. 

The Aga Khan’s Tarnawa is considered the second choice by the bookmakers and he comes in off back to back victories in France in both the Prix Vermeilles and the Prix De L’Opera. This is an in-form runner who has tangled with the best in Europe so will not be a surprise if he’s in the reckoning here. He’s trading around 7/2 with most major bookmakers. 

Talented three-year-old Mogul is set to take on older in this one and he showed his ability to handle his more mature counterparts when he triumphed in the Group 1 Juddmonte Grand Prix De Paris back in September. He still has a lot to look forward to so even a placing here would likely be a feather in his cap. Still, he remains an interesting fancy in the Coolmore colours. His price hovers around a 7/2 margin. 

Richard Mandella’s charge United is the shortest-priced North American based runner in the Breeders’ Cup Turf and he has been mostly contesting Grade 2 contests in California this year against a depleted division. He will get an opportunity to strut his stuff against some of the best in the world here and his 10/1 ante post price makes him an interesting each-way shout. 

Six-year-old gelding Channel Maker is another interesting shout for Bill Mott, who comes in fresh off a pair of victories in the Sword Dancer at Saratoga and the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont. He’s trading around a 10/1 margin right now but could very well be longer on the day if any of the leading fancies make a good pre-race impression.
