There are still a few questions over whether or not the Kentucky Derby will run on time this year and that has made the ante post betting markets even more interesting as punters and bookmakers alike try to figure out the details for the biggest showpiece in American thoroughbred racing.
Despite the fact that horse racing is happening behind closed doors to the ontrack fans, there are still plenty of Kentucky Derby prep races unfolding each weekend and we saw the emergence of several talented colts over the last couple of days.
Charlatan, trained by Kentucky Derby powerhouse Bob Baffert, made the biggest statement of the weekend having romped to a massive victory in an allowance race at Santa Anita - achieving a Beyer speed figure of 106 which put him head and shoulders ahead of any other contenders who ran at the weekend. His stablemate Nadal ran at Oaklawn Park in the Rebel Stakes and was able to put together a really nice performance there and it looks like Baffert is in pole position heading into the first Saturday in May.
As it currently stands, punters have backed Charalatan down as low as a 7/2 shout for the Derby though you can still find him as high as a 7/1 margin with several top European bookmakers. It’s going to be interesting to see how the odds shift around in the coming weeks ahead of the big race.

Tiz The Law can be backed around a price anywhere between 6/1 and 8/1 and that makes him an interesting option here but his price will likely drift a bit as we get closer to the race itself.
