Brother of Super Saver Lines Up First Derby Prep in Sam F. Davis

Leading conditioner Todd Pletcher finally broke his Kentucky Derby voodoo curse last year with a rail-skimming ride from Calvin Borel atop the talented Super Saver (Maria’s Mon). As expected, Pletcher’s barn is loaded again heading into the Churchill Downs showpiece on May 7th and one specific contender in his yard will be looking to win another one for the family.

Brethren (Distorted Humor) is a half-brother to the now-retired Super Saver and the undefeated three year-old is said to be lining up his Derby campaign with a run in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes this Saturday. The Churchill allowance winner will be looking to secure his share of the $225,000 up for grabs, as well as making a declaration about his intentions to get back under the Twin Spires as soon as possible.

Tampa Bay Downs plays host to the mile and a bit contest on a card that also features the Grade 3 Endeavor Stakes and the Florida Oaks – both races paying a solid $125,000.

There are no real stand outs in the Sam F. Davis as many of these contenders have either run in ungraded stakes or are just emerging off the allowance or maiden special weight circuits.

An emphatic victory for Pletcher’s charge would likely prompt Florida race fans to speculate about a showdown with top Derby contender Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie), who is all but confirmed for a seasonal debut in the Tampa Bay Derby in early March. Super Saver’s brother could very well shock the racing world by taking anything in the Florida Derby – the state’s key Derby prep. He’ll likely face Uncle Mo and To Honor and Serve (Bernardini) as well as current Derby second favourite Dialed In (Mineshaft).

Brethren’s connections may just find themselves praying for the rain in April if things go right this Saturday.
