Frankel Out for a Gallop and Heading for the Lockinge

Undefeated racing superstar Frankel was back on the gallops this morning in his home base of Newmarket on Wednesday morning. It was his first effort back on track since picking up an injury a few weeks ago, putting in motion a series of circulating rumours and innuendo that ultimately culminated a false statement that spread like wildfire.

At one point during the Grand National, the racing community all thought that Frankel had been abruptly retired after misinterpreting statements made by Sir Henry Cecil.

Thankfully, Lord Grimthorpe was in attendance at Aintree and quickly doused the fires of speculation by confirming that the decision had ultimately not yet been made. A further scan was scheduled a few days hence and Frankel was given the all-clear to resume racing shortly afterwards.

A few weeks on from that, the world's highest-rated runner was back on target and back on course for a light workout.

May 19 remains the first fixture in his schedule with connections confirming that he is still on schedule for the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes. The season then takes a very interesting turn following his 1m debut as he then carries dual entries at Royal Ascot – with the 1m Queen Anne and the 1m2f Prince of Wales' Stakes both in the reckoning.

The Lockinge boasts 20 entries at the moment with a very short field expected to tackle Frankel. Many will wonder how the injury will affect him, price-wise, and punters may have a chance to secure better odds than they might find later in the season on the undefeated colt.

Expect to see names like City Style, Delegator, Excelebration, Rio De La Plata and Premio Loco take a shot at Frankel in his next outing.

Grimthorpe spoke to the media on Wednesday following Frankel's work and insisted that they were very much on target for the Lockinge but that they would be taking it “one day at a time.”
