Master of Hounds Could Be Kentucky Derby Bound

He had factored into the Kentucky Derby ante post market in Europe for quite some time as a genuine outside shot, but it now appears that the highly-rated Master Of Hounds (Kingmambo) will be firmly pointed towards the Churchill Downs showpiece and the focal point of all American racing. After producing a scintillating shift in the 2011 UAE Derby, losing by a nose to Khawlah (Cape Cross), the AP O’Brien-trained colt will likely head stateside though the option remains to run him on grass in the 2000 Guineas.
While Master of Hounds boasts UK-based connections he is actually a Kentucky-bred and has raced at Churchill Downs, albeit on the turf, in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf where he managed a sixth place finish.
Speaking to And They’re Off, popular condition Aidan O’Brien pointed to the bay colt’s running style as the primary reason why he might be considered for the first leg of the American Triple Crown. “He handled the surface out in Dubai and he’s a horse that has tactical speed and we were delighted with his run. I’m sure the race will be considered and be spoken about.”
Tactical speed can be a make-or-break option in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
Master Of Hounds is trading at around 20/1 for 2000 Guineas glory, well behind the leading contender Frankel (Galileo) who trades as low as even money. Popular bookmaker Bet365 has clipped his price down to 16/1 from it’s previous 25/1 for the 2011 Kentucky Derby.
