Goldream certainly has the bulk of the appeal and will take a good amount of support from the wagering public and that’s valid despite it being his seasonal debut. He has won his first attempt at the year in 2015 and 2014 - a Group 3 and a handicap chase against 20 horses. This is the definition of a hard-knocking handicapper and though this race is likely to be overbet you can expect him to be asking questions at the finish line.
In the next race the Burj Nahaar it looks to be left to Le Bernardin as a banker for many here - he has outperformed expectation in this season and was unlucky last time out not to factor any more. He’s been racing in Dubai since mid-December without stopping so you can assume that he’s going to be just as fit as ever for this one despite a fourth place showing in the Group 3 Firebreak last time out. Prior to that he was able to head out Layl to score in the Group 2 Al Maktoum Challenge.
The Dubai City of Gold Stakes looks to be an interesting race and Roger Varian’s Postponed appears to be the main threat here. He has been pointed at this race for a while and looms as the significant 6/4 favourite. It will be his first attempt in Meydan and that’s always an issue and the fact remains that he is there not to win this race but the next one to come so if he’s in trouble they probably won’t want to leave 100% of his efforts on the track this time.
That being said, Postponed hasn’t finished outside of the top 3 in the last 8 races so you have to respect his ability to be competitive. He closed out last season with a pair of victories - the most notable coming in the King Geoge VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes over Eagle Top after a thrilling final furlong.
