Tuscan Gold Set for Favourites Position in Cesarewitch

The last really big handicap of the season is set to unfold at Newmarket as one of the pinnacle contests of the Heritage Handicap circuit is now less than 24 hours away. Promising a large field, big odds and lots of excitement, the 2011 Cesarewitch is shaping up to be an especially fascinating contest and a real bankroll builder for whoever gets it right as we head into British Champions Day.

The race comes just after the widely-anticipated Group 1 Dubai Dewhurst Stakes where Frankel made his big statement last year and Power is getting backed to do something similar.

There is a lot to like about the Dewhurst but the odds available on the Cesarewitch make it a must-bet situation for the savvy punter.

There have been three or four key favourites for this one for much of the ante post market and it appears as though Tuscan Gold is starting to edge just a bit lower than the rest of the competition. The four-year-old son of Medicean is only on his third start of the year for the Green Door Partnership and things got off to an inauspicious start when he unseated his rider at York in a handicap stakes. He then went on to place in a field of 11 at Goodwood less than a month later.

Expected to flourish third time off the lay-off (he won last year after two starts) and taking advantage of a very large weight advantage, he's got Seb Sanders in the irons for this one and that will give punters added encouragement. Currently trading around 9/1, Tuscan Gold could be 7/1 at the off.

Veiled, a five-year-old mare by Saddler's Wells is trained by jumps conditioner Nicky Henderson and enters this one unraced since June but having conquered back to back handicaps at Ascot and Newmarket and managed to finish fourth when carrying a very large 11-5. He's been taking money and could be able to prove his chops over the Newmarket course once again.

The 2m2f course sets up nicely for Bernie The Bolt if anybody is looking to take a long shot option. Look for him to track along at the back and attempt to weave through traffic throughout the final four furlongs. He's proven that in a stayers handicap at Ascot back in August and he'll be looking to bounce back off his last outing. Bernie The Bolt trades as high as 25/1.

Another outside option is Frankie Dettori's mount Never Can Tell who has only finished outside of the top two once in six races. While the daughter of Montjeu has been running mainly at Chepstow this year, she still could progress to be a factor in this one and trades at a lengthy 33/1. She knows how to find the line and is proven at 2m.
