Weekend Horse Racing Betting Preview PT 2
- By A.J. Ryder on March 4, 2016 22:19 GMTCriterion headlines the Canterbury Stakes after a freshening following his disappointing run in Hong Kong. This is definitely a step down to what he faced last time when he mustered up that ninth place finish. He’s been placed in excellent races and just didn’t look up to speed that day against a talented bunch that included Japanese champion A Shin Hikari.

Blake Shinn gets the call on Millie Fox Stakes winner First Seal who will likely take the bulk of the wagering and the Fastnet Rock mare builds off that Group 2 victory last time out. The China Horse Club star will be looking to make a big impression here against good company.
Flashing over to Newbury in the morning we have the Grade 3 Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase set to unfold with a good pot of money up for grabs to a group of proven chasers. It’s one of those big open handicaps with a favourite going off around 11/2 and this time it appears to be Paul Nicholls Art Mauresque who is getting the lukewarm approbal of the punters during the build up to the race. Obviously the later money will be much more telling but the quality Noel Fehily-piloted gelding has obvious claims from a ratings standpoint though he’s been winless since opening his account for the year in the second time of asking at Cheltenham in a Class 2 novice chase.
He’s been at Cheltenham twice since then and has failed to hit the board in either attempt with plausible each-way prices of 10/1 and 12/1 in the offing each time. He kicked into gear around festival time last year with victories At Kempton, Taunton and Kempton again in the spring months though none of the victories came in prestigious races.
He has an entry in one of the handicap chases at the festival so will probably not want to leave it all out on the racecourse in this one.
The one to watch here might be Sametegal who comes out of the same barn and carries a 7/1 price he’s been knocking on the door as of late with second place finishes in short fields of 3 and 4 but the last one was a much improved half length loss to Five In A Row at Musselborough. Last time he was at Newbury he unseated Sam Twiston-Davies, who returns for another kick at the can this time. This could be a solid each-way wager.
