Fahey Facing Tough Task With Wootton Bassett
- By A.J. Ryder on April 11, 2011 18:12 GMTIt's been described as a "race against time" with Richard Fahey appearing increasingly under the gun to get the highly-rated Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) ready for the upcoming 2000 Guineas.
The undefeated bay colt ended the 2010 flat season with a massive Group 1 score at Longchamp and he has been a strong challenger to the heavily-respected Frankel (Galileo) in ante post markets ever since.
Speaking to the Racing Post, conditioner Faher described WB's chances of lining up in the Guineas as "only 50-50".
Based on a recent gallop, it appears as though he is a ways off top form and using the Guineas as a seasonal debut might prove to have been just a tad ambitious. Fahey went on to declare "He's come out of it fine and looks a picture. But we all know when the Gunieas is... and it may come too soon for us."
With only half a chance at the Guineas according to his trainer, Wootton Bassett price has begun to drift in the ante post market with virtually all major bookmakers. The announcement also prompted a price drop on Frankel, who has been odds-on for most of the off-season, and he can now be backed as low as 4/6.
