The Factor Withdrawn From Kentucky Derby Contention

Once-popular Kentucky Derby contender The Factor (War Front) has been officially ruled off the Derby Trail by connections after failing to recover in time following a myectomy to correct a throat issue. The long-term form and health of The Factor is not jeopardized in any way with connections indicating that a late summer campaign could be in his future, while a run in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes or the Belmont Stakes remains on the table.

Speaking to the Blood Horse Magazine, co-owner George Bolton stated “Bob (Baffert) feels he's not ready for a race like the Derby and, to be honest, I'm relieved.”

After being well-beaten by Archarcharch (Arch) in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, a key prep for the Run For The Roses, The Factor had drifted in numerous European ante post markets from a price of around 5/1 to what was a 16/1 listing before he was lifted off many exchanges.

Many American racing enthusiasts saw The Factor as a major challenger for the former Derby favourite Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie). Todd Pletcher's Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner ran a tame third in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial and prompted a price drop from even money to around 6/1.

The Factor joins a lengthening list of once-prominent Derby contenders who have been forced to the sidelines. Boys At Tosconova (Officer) was among one of the first to be hauled off after succumbing to injury while Tapizar (Tapit) was the next prominent drop-out. There are questions beginning to circulate already about the fitness level of Uncle Mo, who may or may not have had a surgery following the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

With the Factor withdrawn, the market shouldn't be shaken up too much with Nick Zito's Grade 1 Florida Derby winner Dialed In (Mineshaft) reigning supreme as the 4/1 ante post favourite.
